The project Thank DOG e. V.

THE PROJECT: Building A Paradise for Dogs and Humans

The people of Muğla and especially Akyaka are renowned throughout Turkey for their kindness
towards animals and especially towards street dogs. Maybe this is one of the reasons why a lot of dogs
are abandoned in the streets in and around Akyaka - because the people leaving them there hope that
someone will take care of them.

And people do take care - but for their efforts to be most effective, their help needs to be coordinated
and organised. First steps in achieving this have already been taken, thus establishing a certain
measure of control over the local street dogs’ situation, and even already finding new homes for some
of them. To help the dogs in the long term and realise our plans, however, a permanent location is
needed. There, the THANK DOG paradise shall be built, safely enclosed, and encompassing cosy homes
for dogs and their human caretakers alike, a quarantine area for newcomers, individual areas for
elderly or weak dogs, indoor and outdoor training grounds, a dog swimming pool, a veterinary clinic
for emergencies including ambulance vehicles specifically modified to serve their purpose of tending
to the street dogs, and of course a spacious park for dogs and humans to roam around in, enjoying the
beautiful scenery that is so typical of Akyaka with its pine trees, olive orchards and many, many flowers.
The park will also encompass an area where dogs can learn to interact and live with other animals such
as lamas, chicken, and goats, thus preparing them for encounters with different species.

It has been long established that dogs can have a therapeutic effect on humans. Not only would we
like to offer humans who are afraid of dogs the opportunity to overcome their fear. To further help
dogs as well as humans to benefit from the unique bond between them, we would also like to establish
programs working together with care homes for the elderly, orphanages and schools, bringing our
street dogs together with the young and old in order to strengthen their mental balance, sense of self-
worth and connection, as well as provide exercise in outings with our dogs.
Training for rescue dogs as well as agility courses, strengthening the bond between dogs and their
humans while at the same time offering a fun way to exercise, will complement the many possibilities
that the THANK DOG paradise has to offer.

Humans who want to adopt a street dog from Akyaka can get to know the dogs in the THANK DOG
paradise, spend time with them and see if and with which dog they are compatible. Of course, this also
gives us the opportunity to ascertain that those dogs who are ready for adoption will be given only to
humans who are ready to adopt!
In the THANK DOG paradise, we will also offer courses to train humans in understanding and
communicating with their dogs better. Taking inspiration from the world-famous “Dog Whisperer”
Cesar Millan, we aim to spread this knowledge beyond the region of Muğla by providing further
education to dog trainers who can then open up similar schools, thus transforming the situation for
dogs and the humans dealing with them throughout Turkey.

In realising the enormous potential of such a place, THANK DOG will be much more than a shelter for
street dogs. While it will offer the possibility of education and recreation as well as being an economic
factor for the people of Akyaka and Muğla, we aim to also set an example for the whole country in re-
establishing and benefiting from the connection of humans with their best friend.
