Dogs have been living with humans for centuries, serving as guardians, protectors and companions.
Bred to be with humans, they are the only species who actually prefer being with another species
rather than their own. Abandoning them, therefore, is cruel not only because of the hardships these
dogs have to face, but also because it denies them fulfilling their true purpose: the connection with a
human.
Still, it is common to discard unwanted dogs and puppies in the streets. The dogs have to fend for
themselves, find food and water, seek shelter from bad weather, and face territorial conflicts with
other street dogs that often result in injuries. It’s a hard life, and many of the dogs never know what it
is like to feel safe, secure and at home.
Turkish people, however, are renowned for their warmth and kindness, and unlike in other countries,
many take pity on the street dogs, bringing them food, water, and supplying medical help when
needed. Recent state programs have introduced a new policy so that rather than rounding up the dogs
and euthanising them, they are given vaccines and being neutered or sterilised, thereby easing their
plight a little. However, there is still a lot to be done to improve the situation both for the dogs as well
as the humans who encounter them.
The idea, then, is to provide a home for street dogs in need, to give them food, a roof over their heads,
medical care, and a secure and stable environment. On these foundations, it will be possible to build
up trust and thus form a strong connection so that the dogs can bond with humans again. Once this is
achieved, new homes can be found for those dogs that can be adopted. Those who cannot be adopted
can live their lives in the THANK DOG paradise and help integrate new dogs into the pack as well as
train humans - for when taking a broader perspective in order to make a real difference, it’s obvious
that we also need to teach humans who want to help but don’t know how, and educate those who are
indifferent to the street dogs’ needs and suffering.
With THANK DOG, we will save dogs, establish trust and reconnect them with humans, while at the
same time, we will educate humans, inform as well as train them to understand dog behaviour!
